How To

Planning:

In order to properly prepare for your project, map out the process from beginning to end.  Make sure you have accounted for the tools and supplies you will need as well as selecting the perfect color.  The room or area you are looking to paint will determine the tools and products you need.

The right finish:

Flat finish – hides surface imperfections and cleans easily. Use in bedrooms, dining rooms, or
other household areas with low traffic and little hard use.

Matte/Low Sheen finish – provides more durability and stands up to additional cleaning. Use in higher traffic areas such as entry ways, hall ways, and family/children areas.

Semi Gloss finish – allows for frequent cleaning due to its higher sheen level and added durability. Ideal for use in kitchens and bathrooms.

High Gloss finish – provides the most durable and scrubbable finish available. Use on cabinets, doors, and trim.

Preparation:

Surface preparation is the key to a successful paint job. Always refer to the “surface preparation” can label copy on the back of all McCormick Paints products.  The surface to be painted should always be clean and dry. Glossy surfaces should be sanded and clean before priming or painting.
Use the appropriate primer as listed on the can label copy of your finish coat. Primers will help improve top coat coverage and prolong the life of the top coat.

Application:

Always make sure the paint is thoroughly mixed and follow label instructions. For interior painting allow for proper ventilation. For exterior painting, be sure to keep to the shady side of the structure and avoid painting when dew or condensation is likely to form, or when rain is threatening.

The right tools:

Brushes – use for trim, corners, and small areas. Synthetic brushes (nylon/polyester) are ideal for latex based paints. Natural fiber brushes (China bristle) are ideal for oil based coatings, stains, and varnishes.

Roller covers – use for large flat surfaces that are smooth or textured. Synthetic roller covers (nylon/polyester) are ideal for latex based paints. Natural fiber roller covers (usually lambs wool) are ideal for oil based paints. When choosing a roller cover, use a shorter nap for smooth surfaces and a longer nap for textured surfaces.

Clean up:

For latex based paint clean brushes, rollers, and spray equipment with mild detergent and water.
For oil based paint clean brushes, rollers, and spray equipment with mineral spirits or paint thinner.

Helpful hints:

• Allow paint to cure for 30 days before cleaning.  Clean painted surface based on can label copy suggestions.
• Keep a small amount of paint on hand for future touch ups.
• Provide room measurements to your McCormick Paints sales representative or store manager for proper paint calculation.
