Autumn: It’s Time to Paint the Exterior of Your Home

So let’s take a look at your home. Be objective. Look at your house from the street and be honest: Does your home need some “freshening up” to achieve the curb appeal that you would like before friends and family arrive during the winter holiday season?

Fall is one of the best times of the year to paint the exterior of your home. In the mid-Atlantic region, we’re fortunate to have three seasons that offer the opportunity to paint outside, and the fall season offers some additional painting advantages over spring and summer. Lower humidity and less chance of afternoon thunderstorms make fall exterior painting a great time of year for tackling this important project. Plus, your painting contractor (or for you DIY’ers) will enjoy moderate temperatures and lower humidity while working outside.

Less moisture and lower humidity can translate into faster drying times for the paint and better adhesion to your home’s surfaces. This results in a long lasting exterior paint project that you can enjoy for years to come. It certainly makes the job go easier when you, or your professional contractor, are working in cooler, drier, less humid conditions.

Take time to prepare your home for new paint. It is very important to remember that good preparation will pay off with a superior paint job. Cutting corners here often results in less than satisfactory results. Depending on your project, power washing, cleaning, sanding, or resetting nails should be the first step in preparation. Follow up by re-caulking areas that show signs of gaps or cracks in the existing caulk. It is always better to scrap off all of the old caulk and apply a good quality exterior latex caulk to seal our water and air infiltration.  Make sure to use a latex caulk, which is paintable, and do not use silicone caulk if paint is to be applied over the caulked surface.

Once you’re sure the surface is prepped properly, caulked, and dry, it’s time to apply your new paint. Choosing exterior colors doesn’t have to be a difficult process. First, if you like the colors of your current home, our in-store paint experts can match any color of your choice, from any competitor, to our own regionally manufactured paints. Second, if you are looking to change the color of your home and give it a new look, you will find easy to us color tools and color cards available at our stores. Our new web site,, allows visitors to “paint” a preselected home exterior, or upload a picture of your own home to “virtually” paint.  And remember, our team is always happy to offer you and your contractor expert advice on colors, products, proper preparation and application.

A new, fresh look awaits your home. Fall is a great time of year to add curb appeal to your house and make your home the star of the neighborhood just in time for the busy holiday season!  It’s time to paint!
